The Bennington Centre Cemetery is the oldest cemetery in Vermont. In 1762, the town's proprietors voted to set aside land for a burying ground. That fall, Bridget Harwood was the first person to die that was interrred here. Over the years, the cemetery became the final resting-place for five Vermont governors; American, British and Hessian/Brunswicker Revolutionary War soldiers; the poet Robert Frost; and many other notables.
Since 1907 the cemetery has been operated by the Bennington Centre Cemetery Association.
The Bennington Centre Cemetery is a non-denominational, non-profit cemetery located in Old Bennington, Vermont.
