DIRECTIONS

Charles Cresson Jones was a breeder and herdsman of great stature in the agricultural community. He was the manager of James Colgate's 4,000 acre Fillmore Farms on the west end of Bennington.

Jones had been sent to Great Britain on a search for outstanding new stock for Colgate's farm, as well as to engage an English housekeeper for the Colgate family.

He was given passage home on the Titanic, which tragically struck an iceberg. Jones assisted in loading the lifeboats, one of which carried the housekeeper. After the last boat left, one witness reported that Jones stood back and lit a cigar. He did not survive.

Mr. Colgate had a driver go to New York to claim the body of his manager. Charles Cresson Jones was returned to Bennington and interred here.
